Senior Jared Newenhisen, a multi-sport athlete, had to make a tough decision his senior year. He had to choose between soccer, the sport he had played for 14 years, or his newfound passion, cross country.
“I grew up with soccer, from playing on my dad’s GAASA (Greater Akron Amateur Soccer Association) youth league team to playing on the high school varsity team, soccer is a part of me. I battled with myself over the choice of finishing out my high school career with something I loved or trying to excel in something I know I could be successful in,” Newenhisen said.
Newenhisen had dedicated most of his life to soccer, so making the transition between sports was a time-consuming decision. Even though he is no longer playing soccer for the team he once played for, he believes he has left behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.
“In my opinion, I left everything I had on the field. When I couldn’t encourage my boys with words, I would lead by example. I tried to always give my best effort, and when I couldn’t, the team would step up. I know my team respected the effort I put in because I witnessed them reciprocating the same. I’m content with knowing that I had an impact on those individuals. Each member of the team has my utmost respect for pursuing their passion, and I know they all will give it their best. In all honesty, I know that I left a legacy of a tenacious work ethic and dedication,” Newenhisen said.
As Newenhisen reflects on his decision and what has come out of it, he relishes the new opportunities gifted to him through the cross country team.
“My favorite part of the cross country team is how motivated the entire team is. Both the girls’ and guys’ teams are always looking to improve. I am incredibly fond of self-improvement and I see that mindset in each individual on the team. I’m not sure if I’ve made a huge impact on the team yet, but I hope that I can maintain my positive attitude and uplift my teammates. I hope that I can help my teammates believe in themselves,” Newenhisen said.
As Newenhisen closes the doors for now on soccer, and opens the doors for cross country, he believes every athlete should enjoy the opportunities and memories their high school sports have given them.
“High school sports are ultimately for enjoying yourself while you’re young. If you don’t enjoy what you do, then it’s a waste of time and defeats the purpose,” Newenhisen said.
