Sophomore Makayla Martuccio leads the Tallmadge cross country season, earning Suburban League Runner of the Year for the second year in a row.
“Being Runner of the Year is a huge accomplishment and something I’m very proud of. Winning two times in a row is definitely a confidence boost, and something that I want to take to the line as we enter the postseason,” Martuccio said.
For her performance at the Suburban League meet, Martuccio was placed in a vote for the best Summit County athlete for the week of Oct. 7-13. She won, with 52.16% of the votes, due to Tallmadge community’s overwhelming support.
“It was definitely cool to see and watch the votes go up for me during the Athlete of the Week nominations. It was exciting to see how many people voted for me, and it made me feel grateful. I was grateful for all the support and to see how many people get involved and care,” Martuccio said.
Not only was Martuccio Runner of the Year at the Suburban League meet and an Athlete of the Week, she earned fifth place at the GlenOak High School Division II Cross-country District meet, securing an individual spot to the regional meet at Boardman High School. She is attending the Regional meet with an individual qualification as well as with her team, who secured their spot as District runner-up.
Martuccio said, “Getting second at Districts was a big accomplishment for our team when we were ranked third going in. It is definitely a confidence booster and something we can carry to the start line on Saturday (Oct. 26) at the Boardman High School Regional meet.”
