Athletic Director completes first half-marathon

Athletic Director Bill Johnson was one of the tens of thousands of participants in the annual Akron Marathon Sept. 24. This was Johnson’s first time completing the half-marathon. This was an impactful and fulfilling experience for Johnson.

Johnson said, “Right as summer was about to end and we were getting ready to start school, I really just decided that I was going to make a change in my diet. [I wanted to] try to get a little healthier.”

Running was Johnson’s choice for a healthier lifestyle. After renewing a pass at the Natatorium in Cuyahoga Falls, he started working out there.

Johnson said that having the goal to run a half-marathon also allowed him to stay motivated and commit to his fitness.

Having run in relays in the past, Johnson’s biggest challenge was enduring the long distance of the half-marathon.

“I knew it was going to be a challenge, but I was excited for it. I knew it would motivate me to work towards that goal,” Johnson said.

On the day of the race, the weather conditions were ideal for running. This, along with support from Johnson’s family, helped Johnson finish the race.

Johnson said, “The weather was perfect that day. I had run some relays before in the Akron [Marathon], so I knew what the environment was like. All of that makes it an easier time to run.”

The most fulfilling part of the event for Johnson was seeing his daughter cheer him on during his run.

Johnson said that it was very rewarding to see her cheering him on. She was also at the finish to give Johnson a “big hug”.

Having seen the look on his daughter’s face gave Johnson the courage to do the Akron Marathon again.

Johnson said, “I should do this again. I need to do this again.”
